Founded by Dave Cancel, the former chief product officer at Cambridge-based marketing software firm HubSpot (NYSE: HUBS), in 2014 around the idea that messaging apps on smartphones have changed the way people expect to communicate and buy products online. When an enterprise software company installs Drift’s technology on its website, visitors see a pop-up chat window where they can type with a virtual assistant that acts as “a helpful concierge,” answering basic questions and directing the potential customer to the right salesperson. which makes enterprise sales software based around a chat bot-style messaging interface, plans to be in the new location for the next three years so it needed room to grow.
“We see customers that are closing more deals faster,” Cancel said. “We get tweets all day about, ‘I installed drift and closed five deals on the first day’ or ‘I closed a $200,000 deal this weekend.'”
Drift currently has paying customers “in the low thousands,” according to Cancel, including local companies like Rapid7, Rapidminer and Perfecto Mobile. The startup is hosting a customer conference in the Seaport in September where it hopes to attract 1,000 attendees.
Drift is backed by $15 million from CRV and General Catalyst, among other firms.
